If you enjoy the action genre that includes over the top stunts and action shots that leave you marveling at the athletics and wishing you could do that, while chuckling to yourself "seriously", you will enjoy thismuchI did. I was captured from beginning to end. But I will admit I'm a huge fan of these types of over the top but completely entertaining (for me, anyway) action flicks. The one man army mentality and opening scenes live up to that expectation. Chase scenes, fight scenes that produce no wounds or blood *chuckle* add to the action.Although I have never seen the French film this replicated, I enjoyed this version.
. . . the fact that Detroit is synonymous with Death. After John Kennedy's presidency began there, he was shot dead. Soon after Martin Luther King spoke there, HE was gunned down, too. "Dr. Death," Jack Kevorkian, snuffed untold scores. Charismatic union leader Jimmy Hoffa's comeback died there. Six impoverished minority men have been gunned down trying to climb into homes and find drug funding in the past month alone. The "Eat 'em up Tigers" guy and his sidekick were squashed to death by a hit-and-run driver around the same time a major film was being made there last summer. Former Tigers pitcher Aurelio Lopez suffered the same fate. The great magician Houdini died there. So did the U.S. auto industry. Is it any surprise, then, that Paul Walker was killed immediately after the French Canadians behind BRICK MANSIONS made him drive the few remaining American car makes (Ford & GMC, to be specific) around their fake Detroit? The one-time "Motor City" is a curse, even by proxy. Beyond dooming our young star, these foreigners showed utter contempt and a complete lack of understanding for America. "Three million" people may work in downtown Manhattan, but central Detroit falls short of 300,000 on a good day. U.S. mayors are NOT given "neutron bombs" for the purpose of urban renewal. Montreal may have a concrete wall separating those who speak French from people fluent in American. Detroit cannot afford such barriers. BRICK MANSIONS' pretty slums cannot hold a candle to the real thing in "The D." It's ashame Mr. Walker was doomed and left with such a sorry legacy by our not-so-great French Threat.
The movie contributes nothing new to the genre, but disbelief is suspended willingly enough once the action gets up to speed.
Both versions differ severely. For instance, the Extended Cut contains an entirely new soundtrack, David Belle has a different voice - at least that is the case in the English audio track - but he always has a French accent. A lot of the single scenes are recut and often have an alternate order. Some story details are altered,well. And of course, violence is added to the Extended Cut which was probably removed from the Theatrical Version in order to get the PG-13 rating.
